Everything I have Learnt From The Cherry Tree’ . A pensive female, but with a strong and confident gaze, rests her hand on the book from the title, alongside her are eggs, a sign of fertility and good luck. She is shrouded by cherry blossom giving her a softness and the air is filled with perfume from the exquisite scent. The catalyst for this painting was the presence of a cherry tree outside my studio window. Its stalks rattled against my glass, urging me to look at it, touch it, and smell it. This cherry tree has been standing here for a long time, longer than I have, releasing the seasonal productions of transformation. In addition, the isolation and the slowdown caused by the pandemic and entering into motherhood resulted in a malaise and a certain previously not fully attainable dimension of awareness and connection with nature. I have unconsciously been practising Hanami ("flower viewing") which is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers as their blossoms only last a week or two. I have observed the multiplied end and rebirth, the beauty of the death of flowers that looked like birthday confetti, the cyclical nature of nature and its parallelism with my body, soul and emotions. I watched Mother Earth and her Mystery of birth and death, I heard a hint to listen more carefully to this quiet voice coming from the very centre of my belly, this is where my inner driver is. Like this tree, I am also constantly experiencing rituals of transition, liminal states where something old has to die in order for us to enter a new piece of ourselves. Multiple death and multiple rebirths, just like emotions that die and new ones arise. In addition, it is commonly said that each of us changes completely every 7 years because cells in our body are constantly replaced. The presence of eggs is also not accidental, they symbolize a new beginning, potential, as well as the power of creation, godliness and the source of continuous life and rebirth. Studio Haiku - Everything I have learnt from the cherry tree *** She crawled onto my balcony and flashed red beads. I thought, wait. Next time I will capture its coral beadiness. Cherry did not wait. And what is not told dies. So I collapsed on the couch in mourning of all the unrecognized deceased. ***
