Playing on the sonorous purring of cats, ‘Persia’ depicts the iconic face of Jean Simmons, peering with feline intensity through dazzling emerald eyes, ready to pounce. In signature style, Rivans surrounds the starlet with kitty-cat collage: a diamond collar frames her neck, surrounded by feathers (the remnants of her last meal?) while, in amongst the tumbling flora and fauna, striped kitties play, Catwoman slinks in the undergrowth, and ‘Kitten Kong’, rampages through the streets of London. Yet the print is about more than just the connection between the feline and the feminine, inviting the viewer to contemplate our disconnect from animal instincts brought about by city life, where politics favours the individual, and governments toy with our lives - just like the kitten in the headdress, as she teases her little human plaything.
