The images in this print are references to some of the features of the city. The grey tile on the bottom row is the design that is on the paving stones in the L’Eixample barrio in the city. The backwards ’S’ is a tip of the hat to two things - the visual poet Joan Brossa and the fashion label Designer which is based in the city. The circles are all the colours of the Olympic flag, the orange tile features in my favourites piece of architecture in the city, designed by one of my favourite architects Calatrava - it is the communications tower built for the Olympics. The black and yellow tiles are the taxis in the city, there is the Catalan flag and the colours of the FC Barcelona home kit. There is a plan view of the grid ‘manzana’ map of the city and the plain colours represent the colours that flood the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. There are also three tiles along the top which represent the golden sands and blue skies of the Mediterranean. I have a big love of cities built with the beaches and seas playing an important part of their lives - LA, Rio, Sydney, Barcelone, Cape Town and Istanbul being some of my faves.
